SS Lazio Football Club History & Profile
Italian Name:Società Sportiva Lazio
SS Lazio Club History & Facts:
Lazio were founded as Lazio sports club in the Prati district of Rome in 1900. Thier Italian name is Societ Sportive Lazio S.P.A. They share a stadium with bitter Roman rivals As Roma, the Stadio Olympico which holds 72,000 people. Their home kit is white and sky blue influenced by the Greece flag due to Rome’s Greek history.
Lazio are the oldest Roman team and were the only side to try opposing the fascist creation of As Roma in 1927. Their nickname can be seen in the club’s official crest, they are nicknamed le Aquile[The eagles.] The club chairman is Mr. Claudio Lotito and their boss is veteran Italian manager Edoardo Reja. The club first played in Serie A in 1929 and were spearheaded by Italy’s prolific goal scorer Silvio Piola.
Lazio have 2 Serie A titles to their name , once in 1974 and again in 2000 under the infamous Swede Sven Goran Eriksson. They were relegated to serie b for the first time in 1961, the second time was in 1980 when they were found guilty of illegal match fixing. They were the darkest days in the club’s history, they were in the second division for a total of three seasons and haven’t been relegated since.
They’ve won a total of 4 coppa Italias, the last success came in 2004. Lazio enjoyed a turn in fortunes from 1992 onwards and were alot more competitive in Serie A finishing as runners up twice in the 1990′s. Big names such as Pavel Nedved, Chilean Marcelo Salas and Signori established Lazio as credible title contenders. In 2000 Lazio became the first Italian football club to be quoted on the ‘Piazza Affari” which is the Italian stock market.
Unfortunately Lazio could only manage to finish 10th in the 2009/2010 season one of their most disappointing domestic performances in years. The Eagles bounced back with a 5th place finsih in 2011 which gained them Europa League qualification. The standards have officialy slipped thoughin the Italian capital and the blues will need a cash injection to restore them as one of Italy and Europe’s top sides. Today’s stars include club captain Tomasso Rocchi and Argentine striker Mauro Zarate.
SS Lazio European Performance:
Things got even better when Eriksson arrived in 1997 and his 4 year tenure saw a 1999 Uefa cup winners cup triumph against Real Mallorca, and the 2000 Scudetto with Argentinean Juan Sebastian Veron and Italian marksman Christian Vieri proving instrumental in those victories.
In 2006 they came close to being relegated again thanks to a match fixing scandal, but this time avoided it with a minor points deduction and managed to finish 3rd place in the 2007 season. They finished a disappointing 12th in the 2007/2008 season and didn’t even manage Uefa cup qualification.
They have made fleeting appearances in the Champions league their last appearance coming two years ago when they finished bottom in the group stages.
